Apologia
I dearly adore Arthur Trine and I feel bad about dropping him, so I thought I would explain why here, in part to assuage my own guilty feelings...
I thought Arthur would be fun to play in camp because he's kind of a light-weight, fluffy character, and a lot of the counselors especially seemed very grumpy, sarcastic and bitter. So I thought throwing somebody goofy and upbeat into the mix would be fun.
I knew going in that Arthur had very little depth to him in the anime. He is a side character without any personal history or background to work with. Now, I am not comfortable making up lots of detailed back story about a Gundam Seed character. The universe is too detailed for me to just go in there bullshitting. I even try my best to avoid doing so with Emilio, who comes from a much flimsier canon for which I doubt we will ever get that sort of information, because to my mind it strays too much into the terrain of "I want to app an OC and will just pick somebody with no characterisation/background so I can do whatever I like whee." I decided that since I would be using Arthur as a "side character" in camp, as he is in canon, it would not be a big problem to sidestep questions or concerns relating to that lack of background.
However, as soon as I started to play Arthur in camp I realised that I did not want to play him just as a "side character," only used for the occasional reaction shot or goofy facial expression. That IS pretty much all there is to him in canon, but it's easy for me to read into that a little further and find a good man behind the silly front. I wanted to bring out that three-dimensional character, but in order to do so I would have needed to devote more time to him. He would have required more solid relationships, and I was starting to build some of those with other counselors, but it is very hard to do when you are really only able to play two days a week and when you feel unsure about the voice, which slows down the spam-fu. I also ran into trouble with having characters who are too close in canon; Rey and Lunamaria I can handle because I have been playing them a while and can usually balance them in one post, but throwing Arthur in as well is just too much. So Arthur should certainly have responded to Rey's most recent post, but it took over six hours for that post to die down and I just did not have the mental energy to playercest it out at that point.
Besides the concern about voice in terms of "how can I bring out something beyond 'retarded spazzing' but stay IC?", I also had some concern about word choice and rhythm, because I really like the British accent used in the dub but, I don't think I can stomach actually WATCHING the dub, and so I was basing my voice off very minimal conversational exchanges in Japanese in the original show, which made it hard to feel like I had a good grasp of his voice in various situations that would never have arisen in canon.
So basically, the lesson learned is that no matter what, apping somebody without a concrete idea of how to play them is a very poor choice. I thought I had that, or I would not have apped, but it turned out that there were some big flaws in my thought process. F-fail. :( I am sorry, Arthur. |
